-          Retardations are similar to suspensions, but they resolve up by step

-          A retardation occurs when a pitch of a consonant harmonic interval is held while the other voice(s) move.  The held pitch then resolves up by step.

-          The most common retardation type is 7-8

-          An anticipation occurs when a dissonance is caused by one voice moving to the next chord prior to the other voices.

-          The “anticipated pitch” is held, or re-articulated, when the other voices move to the chord resulting in the resolution of the dissonance.
