Music Theory QuickThink:

-          Identify the key

-          The root of the chord is associated with the scale degree number of the key. (Ex.  in the key of Bb Major , F is the 5th scale degree)

-           Convert the scale degree number to a roman numeral.  If the triad of the seventh chord is major , write the roman number in upper case: If the triad is minor or diminished, write the roman numeral in lower case.  If the seventh chord is fully diminished add a small circle sign (°)  If the seventh chord is half diminished add the small circle sign with a slash through it.

-           Example: in the key of G minor, an Eb Major triad would be marked as VI

-           Expected Roman numerals for chords in a minor key

i7, ii ø7, III7, iv7, V7, VI7, vii ° 7

-           NOTE: In order to achieve V and vii ° , the 7th scale degree of the minor key must be raised by one half step (an accidental will appear in these chords).  If the 7th scale degree is not raised, the roman numeral quality would be v and VII.  It is more common to see V and vii ° in music, but either is possible.
