My personal mission statement is to "live a life of integrity, high trust, and continual improvement; balanced between my roles as a husband, a musician, and a teacher."

With that in mind, I strive to bring the following to my classroom and presentations.

Professional Bio


Nathan Muehl, PhD

Nathan Muehl serves as Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Humanities and Director of Bands at St. Petersburg College (SPC). He leads the SPC Community Concert Band and Community Wind Symphony, ensembles that perform multiple times each semester through a diverse series of High School Connections Concerts, Community Connections Concerts, Campus Connections Concerts, Tribute Concerts, and Composer-in-Residence events.

Prior to his appointment at SPC, Dr. Muehl taught instrumental studies at Alderson-Broaddus College, where his responsibilities included conducting the Concert Band, directing the Woodwind Ensemble, teaching the Woodwind Studio, and offering courses in Music Technology and Music Education. He also taught high school band and choir, and gained experience teaching string students through the Jefferson Academy in Columbus, Ohio.

A certified FranklinCovey presenter, Dr. Muehl has facilitated The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People training for hundreds of participants. He integrates these principles of leadership, interpersonal communication, and team-building into his work with ensembles and academic programs.

Dr. Muehl earned a PhD in Leadership and Education with a specialization in Higher Education Administration from Barry University (Miami, FL). He graduated summa cum laude from The Ohio State University (Columbus, OH) with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and a minor in Business. As a Theodore Presser Scholar, he received an Ohio State University Fellowship to complete a Master of Music degree in Conducting. His conducting teachers included Dr. Russel Mikkelson, Richard Blatti, Marshall Haddock, and Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt.

He has also benefited from conducting masterclasses and symposiums led by H. Robert Reynolds, Craig Kirchhoff, Tim Reynish, David Effron, George Stelluto, Virginia Allen, Gary Hill, Kate Tamarkin, Roderick MacDonald, and officers of the United States Air Force Bands. Additional experiences include work with members of the Gewandhaus Orchestra (Leipzig), the University of Cincinnati College–Conservatory of Music, and faculty and students of The Juilliard School (New York).


Dr. Muehl resides in St. Petersburg, Florida, with his wife, Valdeline.
