Music Theory QuickThink:

-          Note values that have flags can be beamed together.

-          8th notes are beamed together by 1 beam, 16th notes two beams, etc.

-          8th notes and 16th notes can be beamed together. Make sure the number of beams still accurately indicated the value of the notes.

-          Notes with flags should be beamed together to reflect the beat unit

-          Notes with flags within beat unit duration 1, should be beamed together.  Notes with flags within beat unit duration 2, should be beamed together, etc.

-          Do not beam notes with flags that would connect notes contained in separate beat units.

-          Beaming does not affect the duration of any note value, it is simply a visual tool to more easily read rhythms.

-          Beaming rules are usually reserved for instrumental music lines.  Vocal music typically breaks the beams with separate notes for each syllable sung.

-          Not all composers strictly follow beaming rules
