Music Theory QuickThink: 

-          For simple time signatures, the top number will be 2, 3, or 4

-          If you are told what value is the beat unit, the bottom number will be 1 for whole note beat unit, 2 for half note beat unit, 4 for quarter note beat unit, 8 for 8th note beat unit, etc.

-          (If you are not told what value is the beat unit, you can gain clues by how notes are beamed together in the measure)

-          Once the beat unit is established, count how many beat units are contained in that measure (the sum of all the notes and rests), and that is the top number.
