- Use the key signature to identify a major key as a potential key for the
music example
- Confirm the piece is in the major key indicated by the key signature,
by identifying the tonic note of the piece.
- o Observe the first and last note of the piece to see if it is the tonic of the
key signature.
- o Observe if the tonic of the key signature appears prevalently in the piece, at
phrase endings, and is often preceded by the dominant or the leading tone of the
major key.
- o Play, sing, or audiate the piece to confirm the tonic note of the piece is the
same as is indicated by the major key signature.
