-          For compound time signatures, the top number will be 6, 9, or 12

-          If you are told what value is the beat-unit, the bottom number will be 2 for a dotted-whole-note beat unit, 4 for a dotted-half-note beat unit, 8 for a dotted-quarter-note beat unit, 16 for a dotted 8th-note beat unit, etc.

-          (If you are not told what value is the beat unit, you can gain clues by how notes are beamed together in the measure)

-          Once the beat unit is established, count how many beat divisional units are contained in that measure (the sum of all the notes and rests), and that amount is the top number.
