-          Do not double any tendency tones of the key.

-          If root position, double the bass: Double the third or fifth if you can obtain smooth voice leading, but this is rarer.

-          First inversion, double any note that is not the leading tone or tendency tone.

-          Second inversion triad,  you should always double the bass (which is the 5th of the chord by definition)

-          For diminished triads, avoid doubling the root of the chord.
