Music Theory QuickThink:

-          Appoggiaturas and Escape tones are both kinds of incomplete neighbor embellishments.  Incomplete neighbor is an occurrence that has the elements of a neighbor tone except one of the two consonant tones (before or after the middle dissonant tone) is not present

-          An appoggiatura has a skip or leap prior to the pitch that results in a harmonic dissonance, then resolves by step

-          An escape tone approaches the harmonic dissonant tone by step and the leaves the tone by skip or leap.

-          The melodic direction of the approach and departure of the dissonant tone is usually in opposite directions (example , descending approach then ascending motion following the dissonant pitch)
