-          If both phrases of a period are of the same length, that is called a symmetrical period

-          If the two phrases of a period are of different lengths, that is called an asymmetrical period

-          If both phrases contain basically the same thematic material, that is called a parallel period

-          If the two phrases contain different thematic material from each other, that is called a contrasting period

-          BONUS: A modulating period, is one where the second phrases is in a different key, and cadences in a different key, than the antecedent phrase

-          NOTE: You can combine the above attributes to describe a period (example you can have a modulating-symmetrical-contrasting period).
