Music Theory QuickThink:

-          A sequence in music refers to a type of repeated pattern

-          There are several different types (categories) of sequences in music

-          A diatonic sequence (also called tonal sequence) is a type of melodic sequence that says the interval size of each melodic interval in the motive, or subphrase stays the same, but the quality may change.

-          This keeps the repeated statements of the sequence within the same key as the original

-          For example, if the original statement has note moving up a Major 3 then down a major second… the next part of the sequence could be up a minor 3rd and then down a second.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

-          A chromatic sequence (also called real sequence) is a type of melodic sequence that says the interval size of each melodic interval in the motive, or subphrase stays the same, AND the quality of the melodic interval stays the same

-          This type of melodic sequence often includes accidentals to maintain the same interval quality, and may move through different keys compared to the original statement
