Suggested Learning Resources
- A sequence in music refers to a type of repeated pattern
- There are several different types (categories) of sequences in music
- A harmonic sequence is one where a series of chords’ root notes share
the same interval distance relationship
- For example, chords with the root notes C, D, E, F would have the harmonic
sequence of an ascending 2nd (could also be called a descending 7th relationship)
- For example, chords with the root notes C, E, G, B would have the harmonic
sequence of an ascending 3rd (could also be called a descending 6th relationship)
- For example, chords with the root notes C, F, B, E would have the harmonic
sequence of a descending 5th (could also be called an ascending 4th)
- NOTE: When these chords, or harmonies, appear in real music, they do not
have to be in root position, and the root notes do not need to be voiced according
to the descriptive interval to maintain that label. As long as the chords follow
in that manner, regardless of position or inversion, they maintain the harmonic sequence
relationship
