- The subject is the main theme of the fugue.

- It is performed by one voice (instrument) at the start of the fugue.

- Any time the subject appears again in the piece using the same pitches (or an octave apart) it is also labeled as the subject

- When each voice enters, they state an ‘answer’ (the subject theme transposed) or restatement of the subject (same pitches as the original subject) independently until all voices have done so (number of voices, or instrumental parts, in the fugue determines how many statements of the subject occur)
